Sunday Swan Watch IX: The Way of the Pelican.

I spoke too soon when I said my computer is back to normal. It has been crashing when I have had more than a couple of windows open at a time. I’ve checked it through and I don’t think it is a hardware problem. Methinks the time has come to reinstall Windows. I have all my data backed up (mostly 1,000s of photos and multiple copies of all my writing), so I’m not going to loose anything on a reinstall. What a headache in any case.

Now to the birds.

As you know if you are following my Swan Watch series I didn’t see them at all last week, in fact the last time I saw them was about two and a half weeks ago.

Io has taken the swans to heart and spends as much time as I do (actually probably more) looking for them.

Any way yesterday she reported she had spotted them, so when I headed out I went pretty much straight to them. They were on a pond just down below our house, where we haven’t seen them before.

I got quite a surprise as they came steaming in my direction. In two and a bit weeks, the cygnets have grown an amazing amount.

They have grown from cute and fluffy to gawky looking teenagers. This piccie shows just how big they are now, in comparison to their mum.
A few portraits.

MumAnd babiesI think the babies are still quite cute (in an ugly duckling kind of way)
And they continue to show more of the graceful form they will have as adults.

A new arrival turned up, an Australian Pelican.
The lighter feathers on these guys are actually snowy white but this fellow was painted by the rich golden light of the early evening.He/she had a bit of a stretch and then Hopped up on a rock to do a bit of preening.I was briefly distracted by this chestnut teal. Then this noisy fellow made a bigger distraction. When I turned back the pelican was busy.
Busy doing Pelican Tai Chi !

He settled down again and seemed to inscrutably say “What are you laughing at?”

Now finally, this may be my last post for at least a few days.

I will be away in the north of NSW for most of next week. It’s my mum’s 81st birthday so I am going up to pay her a visit.

She has an internet connection, but I am not sure if I will be able to upload much.

At least I should be able to get some time for writing in the evenings.

You know, the reinstall is a pain in the butt, but I had to do it earlier this year (it took two days to reinstall my OS and all my software). I had a backup and didn't lose much, just about a week of stuff.

It was a blessing in disguise-- I think I had picked up a virus and I wiped my whole computer clean and it was great. Everything went so much faster... it was a huge difference.

Find a few movies that you really want to watch and just do it during the movies... just check it every 30 minutes or so to keep the install moving along. That's how I did it.

Oh I'm so sorry about your pc problems! Hopefully re-installing windows will sort it out - but you are right - it's so time consuming!! Good luck!!

Awwwwww!! Yay for the beautiful Swan Family!!!!! Aren't they just lovely!! I'm so glad to see them all intact and together and doing just fine - thanks for the gorgoeus pics!! I think all babies tend to be like these - they start of cute and just adorable and super sweet and then comes the gawky teenage phase where they learn attitude as well! LOL!! Awwww but it's really excellent to see them!!

Oh wow that Pelican is beautiful!! How amazing!!! Awwwwww! I love the tai-chi pelican style!! LOL!! And the Teal is another beauty - look at those gorgeous eyes!

Have a lovely time at your mum's!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to her!! 81 years young and still going strong - I hope she has the bestest b-day ever!! Take care and see you soon in blogworld!! x

Lovely pics! Glad you're copyrighting them though. Sorry about your pc. Neil is having this trouble all the time with windows at the moment - even though it's a new computer. It keeps throwing up the blue screen of death.

Those babies are cute in that awkward stage like when kids start growing up and their front teeth are too big for their heads!

Our computer is at that same point. We have an external hard drive that we'll get everything backed up on this week and then do the reinstall. It is a pain, though.

What the heck is the deal with a championship game ending in a tie? Did they play the 2nd game of the AFL championship yet?

Say Happy Birthday to your Mom for us. Have fun and enjoy the visit.
I loved the pelican tai-chi. I just wish I was that flexible.
Lovely pictures as always.

Hi Christy,
I know what you mean about the speed gains on a reinstall. Windows benefits from a new install from time to time even without an infection.
Great tip about the movies.

Hi Jennifer,
They all seem fine, just hard to spot because they keep moving.
The pelican was great, and he seemed all the more interesting with the amazing acrobatics!
I guess it will be nice just to catch up with mum, birthday or no birthday.

Hi Hannah,
I think they are pretty adorable, even if the aren’t quite so cute.
I will have a great time.
We’ll have to see how it goes with the writing, it is certainly usually quiet at mum’s.

Hi Kathleen,
Pleased you like my piccies. I guess putting a label on them makes people think about what they do with them. Not that I am unhappy if people download them for their own use.
I’d guess that if Neil’s computer is new it is a hardware problem. He should get it looked at while it is still under warranty.

Hi Lisa,
They are still cute. I backup to an external drive these days. Nothing else is big enough to be useful.
VFL always had a replay rule and when they morphed in to the AFL they kept that rule. It has only happened three times in over a hundred years so I guess it isn’t a real problem. From the point of view of a lot of Victorians it was an excuse for an extra week of footy.
They have played the second grand final now (Collingwood won). I’ll still post about it but not till I get back from mum’s so it will be kind of old news by then.

Hi Pamela Jo,
I will pass your wishes on.
That pelican tai chi certainly made me laugh. Pleased you like my piccies.

Oh, those are fabulous--you're right that the teenage swans are awkward little fellas, but that mom is gorgeous and I LOVE the pelican!

Smart man to have everything backed up. What a pain in the you know what.

Delighted to see Swan family doing so well. All growing and healthy.

I have finally got back to the fun and re-visited your beautiful bird posts. Hard to find a favourite as the sheer difference and colourful delight of these creatures is such a treat. But I have to come back to the swans, for their black exotocism and the wonderful ugly-duckling babies. Thank you for sharing,
Hope you get your computer fixed. They are fantastis when they work so well you don't notice them. But otherwise a great distraction.
