Flying Bogie-Doubles

Well we are back from our break tonight. So it is time to provide an answer to last week’s What is it Wednesday.

Michael you were half right. But it was no ordinary bridge.

Kitty, good detecting Kitty there was no driver. But it was not on a ferry.

John has nailed it (methinks you have seen similar gear in operation)

Linda yes, “a truck” was not quite it.

Now here is the image, this was taken in Portland (Victoria) on Wednesday.
It is at the harbour where literally mountains of wood-chip are unloaded off these bogie-double semi-trailers.They have two pit-bridges in operation unloading chip so it can be transferred to bulk-carrier ships to go to be turned into paper (probably in Japan).

Thank you Sharon for the compliment.

Here is another sample from my holiday. This feature is called (rather unimaginatively) “The Arch”

It lies between The Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell where we stayed for three nights.

More to come…

Al looks to the heavens

I said I’d try to do a quick post tonight. So here I go!

We have to be off to the airport at 6:30 in the morning. That’s the time I usually leave for work, but it’s a bit early for Deb!

And even earlier for our eldest daughter E who is going to drop us off!

I had a good morning on the way in on the train in terms of writing, but this evening I was tired and only managed just over 100 words. Still I think I developed an idea that will help me jump forward next time I write.

I’m taking my netbook with me so I might get some writing done while I am on holiday. If I get a chance I will put up a post or two as well.

Now a few piccies. You may remember back in March I posted this piccie of the ‘super moon’ that I took with my old camera.Well last night I walked out to meet my youngest Lu at the bus stop. I noticed the moon is close to full so I decided to have a play with my new camera.

This is one of many shots I took. The difference between an 18 megapixel and an 8 megapixel like my old camera is amazing!

And if I crop it down further the level of detail is amazing, even if it is starting to get a little pixelated.Al is in camera heaven!

ARRRR, Remarkable Ruins

Sorry I couldn't help myself with the title of this post.
We continue to explore Tassie and the past few days we have been based in Hobart the capital and have explored chunks of the South East Coast.
Now to the title of this post.
In just the past two days we have seen Pirate Bay (I'm not kidding that really is its name)

Remarkable Caves
And an entire ruined prison town. Now a question. I've been teasing with just a few of the thousands of photos I have taken over the past days in different places. I'm now trying to get my head around showing more when I get home but how do I go about it? Do I do a general overview, or do I focus on particular areas? If so what do I start with?

Merimbula Day 1

There is intermittent wi-fi coverage where we are staying at Merimbula, so I am going to try to put up a post.

After a six hour drive we arrived just before dark on Thursday evening.
In the morning I awoke to the screeching of parrots.
High in the trees the Yellow Box flowers were out. These little guys, Rainbow Lorikeets, were feeding on the nectar.

Because they were high in the trees I was content with a few (not very good piccies).

After brekky we went for a stroll down to the beach. Because of the winter cold (looks nice and sunny doesn’t it?) there was no question of swimming so we poked around the rock pools on the headland.I snapped a few piccies of starfish and

Sooty Terns, these guys fly thousands of miles to Oz shores where they winter.

I thought these weather ravaged rocks were worth a piccie. After the beach we drove into town for lunch. The girls headed back first and when Deb and I got back we found they had made some friends.

These Rainbow Lorikeets are wild birds, but with the tourists around they have clearly become used to being fed. They are so comfortable with people they will perch on hands (this is E’s).Lu was getting covered with cute little birds. They were using any vantage point.I have included this piccie because as I snapped it a wing flicked across the shot. This little guy was giving photographic direction to Io.Finally, a close up to give a real indication of the spectacular nature of these guys’ plumage.
